Organic feminine hygiene products and their health risks

A study has been published that found high levels of harmful heavy metals in tampons, causing a stir.

Recently, many sanitary products made from organic cotton have been sold. We will introduce the reasons why you should stick to safe organic materials.

The safety and risks of organic feminine hygiene products

Regular cotton products are often bleached to make them whiter.
In addition, they often use polymers that harden when they come into contact with blood, which can cause poor breathability and lead to rashes and itching.

Organic cotton does not contain these substances, making it less stuffy and gentler on delicate areas.

The female genitals, including the vagina , have a percutaneous absorption rate that is said to be 42 times that of the skin on the arm.

As for tampons, they are inserted directly into the vagina, which increases the rate of percutaneous absorption even more, increasing the risk of toxins being easily absorbed into the body.

Harmful metals found in tampons

A study published in Environment International tested 30 tampons from 14 brands and found levels of 16 metals, including lead, arsenic, and cadmium (metal concentrations varied by brand and product line).

More research is needed to determine the specific health risks of these metals leaching from tampons into the body, but safe levels for lead have not been established, which is of particular concern.

The route of metal contamination is

Metals can get into tampons through contaminated raw materials (such as cotton) or the manufacturing process (such as the water used in factories), highlighting the importance of organic standards like GOTS certification , which eliminates the use of heavy metals.

What is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)?

GOTS certified ( Organic Textile Standards
This is an international certification that is only given to organic products that meet very strict standards .

For example, the following are some examples:

・At least 70% of the total fibers used are organic.

・All processes are covered, from raw materials to the final product

・Product traceability is ensured

-Managed to prevent confusion and contamination with non-organic products

No residues left in the final product

・No genetically modified (GM) ingredients or additives are used, etc.

These are just a few of the standards. GOTS certification is much stricter than we could have ever imagined, meaning safety is more established and more reliable.
